Work Life Winners: The Associates at Arnold & Porter
When was the last time you saw a lawyer refusing to be paid? Recently, the typical law firm associate salary increased an average of $10,000, with first-year associate salaries generally starting at $135,000.

With the launch of the Give a Little 2006 Campaign, the associates at Arnold & Porter LLP, led by Josh Kaplan, are calling on their colleagues at law firms across the country to donate a portion of their recent unexpected raise to partner charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the Clinton Foundation, HIV/AIDS Initiative, and CARE.

Associates can make their donations at
http://www.givealittle2006.org. You can read our recent press coverage at http://www.givealittle2006.org/campaign.cfm.

For further details contact Josh Kaplan at (202) 942-5273.

Work Life Winner: Lowrie, Lando & Anastasi
Rare is the law firm whose website unabashedly stresses the firm's commitment to work life balance. Specifically, Lowrie, Lando & Anastasi ("LLA") promotes itself right on its homepage as "a new intellectual property law firm founded on a work model that promotes balance in the legal profession."

What this means for attorneys is a billable hour requirement limited to 1,600 hours a year instead of the typical 2,000. LLA argues that its lower billable hour requirement and commitment to work life balance in general translates into attorneys who are more well-rounded, more responsive, and more efficient, and who overall deliver better service to clients.

The media has taken notice. In a recent article the Boston Globe highlighted the routine of firm founder, Matt Lowrie, who walks his daughter to school each morning and regularly chaperones her trips. As noted, the balance evident in Lowrie's life is firm policy, and it is this commitment to balance, Lowrie claims in the article, that allows the firm to thrive by charging less, and offering clients the benefit of fresh, energized lawyers.

For LLA's innovative approach to work life balance in a law firm environment we've named LLA as a Work Life Winner. We encourage our readers to visit the firm's website for further details.

Work Life Winner: Bowman & Brooke - "Bring Your Baby to Trial" Day

Alana Bassin was nervous about asking her firm - Bowman & Brooke - if she could bring her baby and a nanny along with her to a trial in Texas. Turns out there was nothing to worry about -"I'm relieved you're coming to me," said the partner on the case. "Because you'll be more focused if she's with you than if she's at home and you're worried about her.'" What's more, once the trial was underway, Bassin felt comfortable bringing the baby to dinner with her colleagues, and even brought her into the war room where the team prepared for trial.

Such an unusual accommodation of an attorney's family needs is par for the course at Bowman & Brooke, a highly regarded product liability defense boutique with offices in 6 cities. In fact, respect for "balance" runs all the way to the top - name partner Jeff Brooke recently returned from a five year sabbatical spent sailing around the world with his wife.

Michelle Rognlien, the hiring partner at Bowman & Brooke sums up the firm's philosophy, "If we find an attorney who is a great attorney and a great fit for us, we'll do what we have to to make it work," Rognlien said. "We're open to part-time situations, remote connections from home or whatever is needed so our attorneys will have a great experience."

For setting a new standard in work life balance, JD Bliss names Bowman & Brooke a "Work Life Winner."

Work Life Winner: Littler Mendelson Helps Attorneys Balance Family and Partnership
Early in her career at Littler Mendelson's Atlanta office, Dionysia Johnson-Massie knew she wanted to raise a family. While the policies at many other large firms might have forced Johnson-Massie to make a choice between devoting more time to her children and becoming a partner, Johnson-Massie says that Littler Mendelson doesn't subscribe to the arcane view that women with children can't also make excellent partners. As a result, Johnson-Massie was able to feel comfortable beginning a family about a year and a half before her partnership vote.

As discussed in this recent article appearing in the Fulton County Daily Report (published by American Lawyer Media), more firms are finding that policies addressing quality-of-life issues - such as reduced billable hour requirements, as well as those encouraging diversity, are paying dividends in terms of higher retention rates and even new rainmaking opportunities.

Work Life Winner: Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky Website Embraces Quality of Life
When Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky says quality of life is a high priority at the firm, they certainly mean it. The firm's website features a "Quality of Life" section detailing the firm's policies and initiatives regarding such items as flexible work schedules, parental leave, and emergency child care (including back up nanny care). It goes without saying that such a public display of sensitivity to the personal needs of individual attorneys is a rarity among law firm websites.

At JD Bliss, we applaud all efforts to help attorneys balance their work and personal lives, and reduce the stress that often accompanies frantic efforts to juggle a demanding work load with pressing personal matters. Lawyering, while often lucrative, can be a tough and tedious way to make a living, and firms that acknowledge and seek to alleviate the struggles their lawyers often face should be commended. Kudos to Dickstein Shapiro.

Work Life Winner: Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Hires Director of Professional and Personal Life Integration
JD Bliss applauds what appears to be an industry first, in which Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP, a firm of nearly 1,000 lawyers practicing in 10 offices nationwide, has hired Jeannine Rupp as Director of Professional and Personal Life Integration. Ms. Rupp's task is to help the firm’s lawyers successfully balance work, family responsibilities, and other life and career changes. To this end, she is currently interviewing the firm's attorneys about their work/life challenges.

Ms. Rupp holds a master’s degree in organizational and social psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she served as a merit scholar and focused her studies on the integration of work-life responsibilities, gender, professional development and identity.
